For my first event, I have decided to track a show in a small, local theatre. The show I have chosen is Derren Brown- Svengali, a tour currently in the UK . The show consists of mind trickery and hypnotism from a popular television personality. Due to the status of Derren Brown, I believe that the show will be promoted well, and that it will be a sell out.
Another reason for picking this event is because I think it will be interesting to see how the promotion will differ from that of larger scale event. Also, I can compare the promotion of the Wycombe show to the promotion of the same event throughout the tour.
From looking, I can see pretty quickly that there is not much promotion going on for this event at the moment. I can think of two reasons for this:-
Ø The event does not take place for another three months. This means that the promotion might not kick in fully until a bit closer to the time.
Ø The venue is a local theatre, which holds Christmas pantomimes. Most of their marketing at the moment is focusing on that. This includes billboards in town, and space on their website, as well as ads in the local papers.
Also, Derren Brown has a series of programmes on Channel 4 at the moment, called The Experiments, which I imagine is promotion in itself. I think there would be a large amount of people that would watch that and look into any tours he may have running at the moment. They can also rely on word of mouth, and promotion in other towns involved in the tour.

and the other one?
ReplyDeleteOK Jess, interesting choices but now you need to make up some ground - we need lots more on how these events are doing, their marketing and PR - then some comparison of approaches, and demograophics if you can find them. Theres a friendly 'Creative Learning' guy at the Swan called Mark Jones (mjones@wycombeswan.co.uk) who may be able to help with some background to the Swan audeince.
ReplyDeleteKeep at it -
